New York School District Enables Next-Generation Google Apps for Education Learning with Aerohive’s Cloud-Enabled Wi-Fi
Elwood is a unique suburban Long Island community located in the state of New York approximately one hour south of New York City. Elwood’s population is about 13,000, with a student population of approximately 2,625. Elwood Union Free School District is comprised of four schools including Harley Avenue Primary School (grades K-2), James H. Boyd Intermediate School (grades 3-5), Elwood Middle School (grades 6-8) and Elwood John Glenn High School (grades 9-12). The school district strives to provide an excellent educational experience to empower and inspire each student to succeed academically, socially and emotionally in an evolving global society.
Elwood Union Free School District leverages Google Apps for Education, where everything is automatically saved in the cloud and 100 percent powered by the Web. Google Apps enable students and faculty to access documents, calendars and sites immediately on almost any mobile device or tablet. The transition over to a cloud-based environment put a strain on Elwood’s existing infrastructure and it quickly became clear that the school needed to find a reliable Wi-Fi solution that could seamlessly support this new environment in all of its buildings, on a limited budget. Also important to consider was the transition to online testing, which is on the horizon as a mandate as soon as next year. Faced with these requirements, Gene Tranchino, executive director of administrative and instructional technology at Elwood Union Free School District, began his search for a robust wireless solution.
Elwood Union Free School District worked closely with LogicWing to evaluate traditional networking vendors including Cisco and Alcatel before selecting Aerohive. Ultimately, Aerohive was chosen for its flexible, robust and affordable wireless solution and it’s controller-less architecture, which made for an extremely quick and easy deployment. Elwood Union Free School District is currently utilizing Aerohive’s HiveManager Online and HiveAP121s in all of its buildings.
